About
My still life images are based on memories, which are mainly coming from my early childhood in Thailand and Israel.
The Land of Lost Toys
2003 – 2007
Among our deepest memories, where one stores the thoughts of one’s loved ones, where one cherishes one’s possessions, one hides one’s childhood, the childhood of old and lost toys.
It happens, we don’t say our last word, we don’t whisper one last secret, and we don’t shed a tear and give a kiss good-bye. They do appear in the course of our lives more than once, in unknown streets, in the old markets, in abandoned backyards. They just stand there with no identity, with no name, with no child.
The Land of Lost Toys was created between 2003 – 2007. I was drawn to work on this project when I came across a tricycle on a street in Jafa, Israel. The tricycle brought back memories of my childhood and I wondered about the child who had owned it and lost it, in time.
I decided to look for other lost toys. Toys that have an interesting history, hold wonderful stories, and lived in far away places. I was attracted to toys that I sensed had memories worth being cherished, and I wanted to give something back to them.
Kitchen Appliances
2005
I have a strong memory of myself at the age of nine standing on an old stool in my grandmother’s bright kitchen.
A kitchen that when you ventured into it you knew, that you were home.
She reminds me to keep objects, words, adventures and little collections throughout the years, as if I had found treasure. When she decided it was time for her to find a different adventure and a new path, she gave me her old kitchen scales.
I found it in the attic years ago and it sparked the idea to look for more stories. So I ventured through flea markets, I touched, I smelled and when I found. I listened to the stories that were whispered through the chipped paint, the worn metal, and more than all, the smell of cooking.
The appliances exited my imagination and I knew that I wanted to capture not only the stories that were told, but also the form and character that the appliances took on themselves.
I enjoyed seeing them come to life: a dancer (image #3)– fulfilling his long time dream,
a bird (image #8) – looking for its freedom, a scorpion (image #16) – seeking a mate.
But mostly rested on the idea of having it hold a simple yet pure memory.
Animals
2008 – 2010
When I was a little girl I imagined I was a cat. I walked on all four and napped so comfortably in the corner.
Then I decided to become a giraffe, tiptoeing higher then ever before.
Then I was a kangaroo jumping all around.
I was forming and building little stories to try and live through the exciting adventures of the animal’s free spirit lives. Letting my wild imagination grow, experiencing a smile through the simplicity of what is seen and enjoying “wild life” scenes in my room.
I choose to use, used miniature toy animals, for their stories will carry on into yours and mine.
I found that some of them hold a great sense of humor, some may appear to be a bit sad and all of them may have come here to bring a little fantasy into our lives.
